Probably the most famous yacht of them all the Royal Yacht Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co on the Clyde in 1953 and was in active service until 1998, She is now berthed permanently at Leith in Scotland and is open to the public. She is 412 feet long and has a beam of 55 feet. Several improvements were made to her during her life. We have built four models of Britannia, all in her original, more classic 1960`s layout. Two of these went to British collectors and two to the U.S.
At 1/96 scale the model is a little over fifty inches long (1200mm) and has a beam of seven inches (175mm). As normal a fiberglass hull is used with superstructure components being built from timber and aluminium, the fittings being a mixture of brass, resins and cast light alloy. Britannia`s decks are hand laid in apple, for its light colour, and the planks are `caulked` with black paper. There are over two thousand 2mm strips on each model. She is also unusual in that on one of the models we have built, a lot of the fittings were 24 carat gold plated, as is the line around the hull. She also has a fully detailed wheelhouse.
