H.M.S. Kelly was completed in 1939 as the leader of the K Class of destroyers built in the years leading up to the war. The J,K & N`s as they were known were all built to the same basic design by various shipyards around the country. Kelly was built at Hawthorn Leslie`s on the Tyne and was christened by Miss Antonia Kelly, the Daughter of the then C-in-C, Home Fleet Admiral Sir John Kelly. She was famously commanded by Lord Louis Mountbatten as leader of the 5th destroyer flotilla for 21 months until her sinking off Crete in May 1941, with the loss of 130 lives, by German dive bombers.
This class of ship`s main armament was three twin 4.7” MkXIX guns, she carried ten 21” torpedoes in two mountings, one quad 2pdr pom-pom mounting and two quad 0.5” machine guns. As was normal in fleet destroyers she was fitted with Asdic and two D.C. throwers and one over the stern 6 charge rack.
Dimensions. Length 356`6” Beam 35`8” displ. 2330 tons speed 32 knots.
The model shown accurately reproduces as much of the original detail of the actual vessel as possible, the hull is individually plated to represent the steel plates she was fabricated from. The weapons are miniature masterpieces in their own right, a single twin4.7” mount can take two days to make on its own. The superstructure on the model shown is high impact styrene, light in weight as this model is fully radio controlled, fitted with batteries and electric motors, she looks a sight indeed at a scale thirty knots on a lake. As is normal at this scale the model`s small parts are made from light alloys and resins, detail work is principally brass etched or fabricated to suit.
1/96 scale Length 44.5” (1130mm) Beam 4.5” (115mm)
